If you're looking ahead to the new year, here are some things that you're going to see, and see more of, in 2019 for the Salon Industry.
ONLINE EDUCATION IS GOING TO BE BIG. I promise. It's already had tremendous growth in the past year, and it's only going to get bigger. This is a good thing for both students and educators and here's why -
What this means for you:
The access we as stylists will now have to education is UNPRECEDENTED. Behind The Chair was one of the first out of the gates with something I am loving - an option to buy a singular videos with one specific haircut or coloring technique. This is amazing because it makes quality education affordable and accessible to EVERYONE.
ESPECIALLY INDEPENDENT STYLISTS and STUDENTS!!!!!
On demand education education will be upping games all around. Gone will be the days of trekking to the salon on your day off to see a "meh" quality presentation or class with an "ok" haircut or color application look and learn that's mostly designed to sell you product. Because there will be so much access, you're going to see the imapact in not only the quality of education, but the skill level of stylists.
Not being able to afford a week off from behind the chair, a flight, hotel stay, and all the miscellanious expenses that come along with a trip to a world class cutting or coloring class in New York or LA is absolutely NOT synonomous with lack of interest or the value placed on education by most stylists.
We are going to see the playing field leveled in a way we never have before.
Educators and Advanced Stylists
Ever thought of creating your own online content and charging for it? Now is the time. There are multiple platforms to create online courses like Teachable, Kajabi, even private links on sites like Vimeo. Bigger sites like Skillshare and Udemy will put your content in front of a much larger audience, but they will take a considerably larger cut of your earnings. I use Wix and they even have an option for me to add video content to my site that is available to rent just like itunes, amazon, or pay per view on cable, I set the price.
